Is Multi-Level Marketing
Good or Bad

With many people looking for ways to increase their income or avoid the down sides of being employed, home-based businesses are becoming increasingly popular.

Considering its many benefits and income potential it’s not surprisingly that multi-level or network marketing (MLM) is among the most popular choices: An estimated 6.2 million Americans have joined MLM companies!

But many people miss out on this opportunity because of misperceptions about multilevel marketing.

Don’t be one of them!

In this article I highlight some of the many benefits of joining an MLM company and address some of the main objections to MLM in this article.   I highlight the specific benefits to healthcare providers of joining an essential oil company and doTERRA in particular in this article)  (What is the best multi level marketing company?)

What is MLM?

MLM or network marketing is a marketing model in which companies use independent distributors rather than a hired sales force to promote and sell their product.

Like a traditional commissioned sales force, distributors receive commissions on any direct product sales they make.

But unlike a traditional sales force they also receive commissions on the sales made by distributors they bring into the company as well as the sales of distributors that those distributors bring into the company and so on for several ”levels”.

This marketing model benefits the company because they don’t have to hire and train a sales force, or provide benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans. They also don’t need to advertise. And, because distributors are always bringing new distributors into the business, both their sales force and products sales are constantly growing.

But the benefits to the company are more than equaled by the benefits to the distributor – which is why MLM continues to be so popular. Unfortunately, many people miss out on these opportunities because of misconceptions about MLM.

Benefits of MLM

Increasingly large stacks of coins with people sitting on top of them.

The benefits of becoming a distributor for an MLM company include ..

1. Freedom from Discrimination or Hiring Restrictions. Network marketing businesses are open anyone 18 years or older regardless of gender, race, education, physical ability or employment history. And, as an independent. distributor you will never be laid off or fired (as long as you follow a few simple rules). Advancement and reimbursement are entirely under control of the individual distributor so there is no possibility of covert discriminatory practices as there is with employment.

2. The Ability to Set Your Own Hours.  As an MLM distributor you are your own boss. You can choose to work either part-time or full-time.

3. The Ability to Work From Home. In most cases you can also work from anywhere in the country and often from anywhere in the world.

4 . Minimal Start-Up Investment. For most MLM companies you can get started simply by purchasing a start up kit. There is no need to develop or patent your own product or start your own company.

5. No Overhead.  Because you can easily work from home there is no need to purchase or rent a physical place of business. You also don't need to hire or pay employees. So there is no overhead.

6. Protection from Lay-Offs and Firings. As an MLM distributor you can never be laid off or fired. (However, your company can go out of business, which is one reason why you need to be careful when you choose which MLM company to work for.)

7.The Ability to Create and Grow a Passive, Residual Income. By far the greatest advantage of joining an MLM company is that it allows you to create and grow a passive residual income. That is, an income that you receive every month -month after month - even if you spend the month reading novels on the beach!

And that income can be substantial:  MLM is the only business model in which anyone can earn the kind of income usually only available to CEOs and high level executives.

8. The Ability to Get Help With Your Business. In addition to being the only business model where you can create and grow an impressive and residual income MLM is also the only model where it is in the best interest of those “above” you in the organization to help you succeed.

In fact the only way you can be successful in MLM is if the distributors in your down-line are successful. At its best MLM can be defined as Achieving your goals by empowering others to achieve their goals while sharing a product or service you are passionate about.

WHY MLM

MLM is the only business in which anyone can earn the kind of income usually only available to CEOs and in which it is in the best interest of those “above” you in the organization to help you succeed.

Precautions

While the benefits of becoming an MLM distributor are substantial, there are a few precautions when choosing an MLM company. For example you want to. . .

1. Pick a Good Company. Although you will never be laid off or fired as an MLM distributor, the company you are with can go out of business. This has happened.

So you want to be sure you are with solid company showing good growth and the potential for that growth to continue. You also want to choose a company that has a good compensation plan and that doesn't try to "screw" their distributors.

2. Choose a Product that Resonates with You. While there are naturally born sales people who are able to literally "sell anything" for most of us it helps to pick a product that we truly believe in and, if possible, that we are actually passionate about. It's also helpful to choose a product that is somewhat unique to the company that sells it.

Objections to MLM

There are many benefits to joining a multi-level marketing or MLM company.  But there are a few misconceptions that prevent many people from joining.

Most of these are misconceptions about MLM itself. If you buy into these objections you may be seriously limiting your ability to create financial freedom for yourself and your family. Chief among MLM misconceptions are . .

  1. The mistaken idea that MLM is a “pyramid scheme”
  2. The (very mistaken!) idea that MLM is somehow a  "scam"
  3. The thinking that it is somehow “wrong” to make money off the efforts of someone else, and
  4. The idea that to be successful in MLM you need to relentlessly chase after your family members and friends to get them to “join your business”.

In my next article I will take a look at each of these
