How to Choose an
Essential Oil Company

There are many essential oil companies.  So how do you choose which company to use?

I would suggest you look at the quality of the essential oils produced, the integrity and sustainability of the company producing the oils and, of course, your income potential

Essential Oil Quality

Adulteration

All essential oils are not created equal - nor are they all pure: An estimated 80% of essential oils on the market today are adulterated. Even some large, well-known essential oil companies are producing adulterated oils.

Adulteration affects both the efficacy and the safety of the oil in question. So, as a health care provider, you want to be certain you are not using or prescribing adulterated oils.Click on this link to learn more about adulteration and essential oils.

Testing

As pointed out by ConsumersAdvocate.org, quality and testing go hand-in- hand. Testing is essential to ensure that an oil is not adulterated or contaminated.  It is also important to ensure that the oil contains all the chemical constituents that it should.

While many companies test using chromatography and mass spectroscopy, these tests alone can not ensure that adulteration and contamination have not occurred.  In contract, doTERRA conducts extensive tests on their oils. These tests include:

  1. Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS)
  2. Organoleptic Assessments
  3. Specific Gravity
  4. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)
  5. Optical Rotation
  6. Refractive Index
  7. Contamination Testing for bacteria
  8. Heavy Metal Testing
  9. Stability Testing
  10. Patch Testing for Skin Sensitivity

And they conduct this testing repeatedly throughout the production process: All together, doTERRA conducts more than 176 analyses on each bottle of their essential oil. Click on this link to see more on how doTERRA tests their oils

Sourcing

The environmental conditions under which oil producing plants are grown - including the soil, amount of rainfall, temperature, and altitude - all affect the quality of the essential oil produced.

Many essential oil companies simply purchase large tracts of land and grow all their essential oil producing plants on those tracts.

In contrast, doTERRA sources their oils throughout the world – wherever the oil producing plant in question grows best. Click on this link to learn more about how doTERRA sources their oils.

Distilling

Distilling essential oils is an exacting process. It  requires customized pressures and temperatures to ensure that the chemical profile of each oil is preserved.

doTERRA partners with expert distillers to extract each essential oil. This ensures that each of their oils retains the chemical constituents that are unique to that oil and that provide its benefits. Click on this link to learn more about how doTERRA distills their oils.

Company Integrity

Sign saying right and wrong

The founders of doTERRA started the company because they were not happy with what they saw going on in the essential oil industry.

Their continuing commitment  to produce the highest quality essential oils led to the trademark CPTG - certified pure, therapeutic grade - through impeccable sourcing and extensive testing.

But producing the highest quality essential oils is only part of the doTERRA story.  Many of their essential oils are sourced in developing parts of the world, so doTERRA also focuses on creating economic opportunity and financial stability in developing nations and on providing fair pay for its growers and distillers. Andy they give back back to disadvantaged communities through their Healing Hands Foundation.

They also focus on the environmental preservation and sustainability. This is important because it takes a lot of plant material to produce essential oils.

doTERRA complies with all national and international environmental regulations and guidelines and works to preserve native biodiversity and agricultural knowledge.Click on this link to learn more about doTERRA's environmental policies.

Company Sustainability

In addition to integrity, company sustainability is also important:  You don’t want to build your business only to have the essential oil company you are working with go under.

Sustainability is affect both by the viability of industry itself as well as the company that is part of that industry.

Driven by increased interest in natural health and relaxation, the essential oil industry is rapidly expanding: Valued at 5.1 billion in 2017, the industry is projected to reach $25 billion by 2028. rapidly expanding: Valued at 5.1 billion in 2017, the industry is projected to reach $25 billion by 2028. And doTERRA is a major player in that industry.
